If you’re thinking you can’t get life insurance because your blind, think again. We can prove it to you today! Now we fully admit there are companies that will have an issue with blindness, that doesn’t mean they all do.
In this article, we will cover how final expense companies underwrite this condition, cover your options and give you an easy to use formula to find the best policy.
The Reality About Burial Insurance for The Blind
The first painstaking reality is that being blind has the obvious hurdle that not a lot of companies are equipped to help service blind people, and this is also true in the insurance industry. And when it comes to offering insurance coverage, yes, many insurance companies approach it as high risk, but there’s still other insurance companies that offer coverage.
Whole life insurance also known as burial or final expense insurance can all be done on a simplified basis. This means there’s no medical exam involved or paperwork. The insurance companies have processes where you can completely apply with just your voice! This has been revolutionary for blind folks.
Blindness & Underwriting
As you are probably aware, underwriting is simply the process the insurance company uses to evaluate risk. Each company is different, but it usually comes down to the same two or three steps for them to evaluate you.
1. They ask health questions
2. They evaluate prescription history
3. They analyze MIB for any relevant records
There are also some companies that offer burial policies that actually have no underwriting whatsoever. However, that usually means, they just assume you have bad health and therefore they simply quote you the most expensive coverage. We’ll go into more detail about that in a minute.
The Health Questions
Every company that’s going to offer different levels of pricing will have a series of health-related questions so they can see what level you qualify for based on your health. You must answer these as part of the application. The questions are different for every company since they come up with their own assessments. The questions are often somewhat similar in nature, just different wording. Maybe they have different time frames for wanting to know when you were treated for a medical issue.
The tip to keep in mind here is, if they don’t ask about a health issue, they don’t care. For example, you will never see a burial insurance company ask if you have high blood pressure. This is because they don’t see someone having high blood pressure as a major health issue that’s going to change their opinion on offering you life insurance.
Here’s something else to know about health questions
If you start answering “yes” to the questions on the application, it will mean one of the following conditions is true:
1. You will pay a higher premium.
2. You will pay a higher premium and have to endure a partial or full waiting period.
When it comes to blindness, you won’t find a single funeral insurance company that asks about blindness in their health questionnaire. Earlier we stated that if they don’t ask, they don’t care, but there is a small catch.
While blindness itself is something they may not care about, there are other health questions that they will have issue with. Such as home health care or needing assistance with daily activities (ADL).
That type of health question will be present on nearly all of the burial insurance applications. Below is a quick example of how the insurance companies might ask about these issues.
Do you require assistance from anyone with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, or taking medication?
That’s where the catch comes in, because more often that not, those who are blind tend to need help with all sorts of daily activities. If you are blind yet still completely independent, you are definitely in the minority!
Any company that if you need home health care or assistance will decline you if you say yes. If you are blind and need help from anyone with anything in your daily life, you cannot get coverage from most final expense life insurance companies.
That said, there are a small handful of final expense companies that do not ask if you are on home health care or if you need help from anyone with your daily activities of living. If they don’t ask that question, then its just as if you have no health issues whatsoever.
Medications & MIB File
There are no medications that we are aware of that are designed specifically for blindness. For this reason, an insurance has no way of knowing if you are blind or not requesting your prescription history. In regard to MIB, they won’t have any records of you indicating that you are blind. Even if they did, it wouldn’t matter because no company cares about blindness.
Policy Options and Best Companies for The Blind
Obviously, this article focuses mainly on blindness, but your overall health will be taken into consideration. So, if you deal with other health issues, that will create other hurdles that need to be addressed.
Back to just the blindness though, we will divide this into two pieces. The first section will be “being blind and totally independent”. The second one will “being blind and needing assistance with daily activities”.
Being Blind and Totally Independent
This one is as straight forward as it gets. If all you deal with is a lack of vision, every single final expense life insurance company will accept you, period. Remember, they don’t ask about blindness, so this is not a risk factor they care about.
This also means you’ll be 100% covered from day on. In addition, you will qualify for the lowest rate possible with every company.
Being Blind and Needing Help With Daily Activities
If you are in this situation, your options are severely limited. The upside is that you can certainly still get coverage, it will just come at a cost. You can either:
1. Apply with a company that does not ask if you need help with any daily activities.
2. Take out a guaranteed issue policy
The first option is significantly better than the second because if they don’t ask, they don’t care. Whereas the second option is going to assume the worst and charge you accordingly.
For the first option, the only company we are aware of that won’t ask that question is Royal Neighbors of America. Their health questionnaire is devoid of anything related to home health care, or assistance with daily activities. If blindness is the only factor, you could still get full and immediate coverage with them at the lowest rate they offer.
What if you don’t qualify with Royal Neighbors?
As stated before, blindness is only one piece and Royal neighbors has a variety of health questions that will be on the application. If you start having to answer “yes” to their other health questions, it might mean that they won’t offer you coverage which would leave you with having to find a guaranteed issue policy.
A guaranteed issue policy is exactly what it sounds like, you are guaranteed to be approved and issued a policy. They don’t ask any health questions at all; you could’ve just had a heart transplant last week and they would still approve you. If you meet the age requirements, and you are of sound mind to enter into a legal contract, you qualify.
Guaranteed issue policies are generally for people with very poor health which means they cost more on a monthly basis and there’s a waiting period. The waiting period typically means that if you pass away within the first two years of the contract due to natural causes, it will only give your family the money back plus interest.
